Robert E. Brooks

Robert E. Brooks, 80, of Kiowa, died Wednesday, April 23, 2008, at his residence.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Kiowa First Baptist Church with the Rev. Dennis Piearcy officiating. Burial will be at Kiowa Cemetery under the direction of Bishop funeral Service.

Pallbearers include Kenneth Battles, Jim Ryan, Buzz Henry, Richard Choate, Jerry Johnston and Lee Sarter.

Born Feb. 19, 1928, in Oklahoma City, to James Cleveland and Cora Elizabeth Lovett Brooks, he attended school in Oklahoma city, before moving to Stockton, Calif., in 1941. Shortly after moving to Stockton, he met and later married Virginia Katherine Workman on March 20, 1948, in Stockton.

He served in the United States Army during World War II before returning home to begin working for Tillie Lewis Foods.

In 1957, he and his wife opened the Valley View Hunting Club, a pheasant hunting club, which they operated until 1968. After closing the hunting club, he returned to Tillie Lewis Foods, where he would later retire as a maintenance mechanic for the cannery.

He was a member of the Delta Model A Club in Stockton and the Stockton Baptist Church before moving to Kiowa in 2004, where he attended the Kiowa First Baptist Church. He was a outdoorsman, enjoying bear, coon and bird hunting, fishing and taking his family on numerous camping trips.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Virginia Brooks, of the home; a daughter, Katherine Bryan, of McAlester; a son, Donald Brooks, of Kiowa; a grandson, Keith Criddle and wife, Carole, of Sparks, Nev.; a great-granddaughter, Sydney Criddle, of Sparks, Nev., and two sisters, Stella Redcliff and husband, Bob, of Luther, Betty Martindale, of McAlester.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Cora Brooks; an infant son, Ronald Brooks, and brothers and sisters.

The family requests memories be made to the First Baptist Church of Kiowa, P.O. Box 39, Kiowa, OK, 74553.

    Alyce Yvonne Knight Lerblance was born on November 21, 1923, in Pittsburg, Oklahoma, to Fred C. and Letha Mae Knight.  She was the fourth of seven children born to Fred and Letha Knight.  Alyce grew up in Wilburton and graduated with the class of 1941 and was a graduate of Eastern State A & M in Wilburton.
