Jim L. Walker, 72, of McAlester

McALESTER — Jim L. Walker, 72, of McAlester, died Thursday, May 2, 2013, at his home.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Chaney’s Memorial Chapel. Arrangements are under the direction of Chaney-Harkins Funeral Home of McAlester.

Born March 16, 1941, in McAlester, he was the son of George Lee Walker and Helen (Poole) Walker. He received his education and graduated from McAlester High School in 1959. Upon graduation he attended Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee, where he met Frances Mills on the first day of class in 1959. They were married June 11, 1960, in Stroud.

He joined the United States Navy during the Vietnam War in 1967. He served on the USS John F. Kennedy aircraft carrier and was honorably discharged in 1971.

He then rejoined the family business, Walker’s Welding and Machine Works in McAlester.

He was group leader and singer of the Southern Gospel, Prodigal’s Quartet. They traveled the United States and Canada sharing the “Good News” music. He also hosted a local gospel music program, The Southern Gospel Radio Network, on KNED Radio.

He was of the Southern Baptist faith, a 32nd Degree Mason, and, in earlier years, a member of the Lion’s Club, Rotary Club and founding member of the McAlester Optimist.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Walker, of the home; children, James Lee Walker Jr. and wife, Lori, of Kingston, Kimberly Key, of Oklahoma City, Lisa Dawn Walker, Corpus Christi, Texas, Julie Helen Walker and K.D. Dunn, Carrollton, Texas, and J. Jeffrey Walker, Carrollton; grandchildren, Jason Lee Walker, Tiffany C. McMurray, Christopher L. Key and Kelli Walker, and eight great-grandchildren.
