Barbara Vaught

McALESTER — It is with great sadness that the family of Barbara Vaught announces her passing, April 12, 2014.

Barbara was born March 7, 1940, in Crowder, Oklahoma, and it was there she met her husband, J.C. Vaught, Jr. J.C. loved and provided for her for over fifty-five years. During her life she raised four daughters in addition to selling Avon, managing several restaurants and finally retired after working in the bakery at the McAlester Wal-Mart.

In addition to being a loving wife, mother and grandmother, she enjoyed arts and crafts, sewing, crocheting, gardening, computers and, most recently, embroidery. She loved every shade of purple, iris were her favorite flowers and she never met a rock that she didn't like. She would pick them up from anywhere she found them.

Not many knew it, but Barbara had a strong addiction to Tootsie Rolls, sometimes leaving little piles of empty wrappers near her computer or bed side table. She was shy but had a wicked sense of humor that she shared with family and close friends. Even in her final days she would smile and sometimes laugh at funny family memories or someone sharing a humorous story. Those who saw this side of Barbara were indeed blessed.

Barbara was proud to be an American and was patriotic far before it was cool to show it. In addition to the flag that flew in her yard, she had wind chimes, key rings, jewelery and pictures. The wallpaper on her computers were of the Statue of Liberty, the American Bald Eagle and of course, the American Flag.

She will be sorely missed by her husband, J.C., and four daughters who adored her, Terrie and husband, Mark Burton, of Ontario, Canada, Tammie Herron, of McAlester, and twins, Toni Vaught and special friend, Lana Boyce, of Tulsa, and Traci Carr, of Stidham. Barbara was the proud grandmother to Melodie, Amy, Hunter and Jared and Jamie, Erin and Laura Burton, who will all miss her very much. In addition, Barbara had three great-grandchildren, Luke, Kalynn and Autumn who will miss getting to be spoiled by her. She also wanted to include her three "furry children", Sophie, Sambo and Mango in this announcement.

Barbara was also survived by her older sister, Brittie Boatman and twin sister, Norma Benson, both of McAlester. She leaves behind sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces, nephews and other special family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, N.T. "Dutch" and Foy Wininger; in-laws, Joe Sr. and Josie Vaught; brothers-in-law and a son-in-law

The family will receive visitors for a Gathering of Rememberances from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Bishop Funeral Home on Wednesday, April 16, 2014. Private services will be held at a later date at the Crowder Cemetery.

The family would like to thank Micah, Cathy, Vicky and Lisa at Heartland Hospice for their kind, loving and professional services during Barbara's illness. They made her journey as easy and gentle as they could.
