Amelia ‘Mel’ Margaret Jones

McALESTER — Amelia “Mel” Margaret Jones, 89, of McAlester, died Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2013, at Walnut Grove Living Center.

The family will receive visitors from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Bishop Funeral Home. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Memory Gardens Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Rodney Briggs officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of Bishop Funeral Service.

Born Feb. 19, 1924, in Melcher, Iowa, she was a daughter to Joseph and Pauline (Kauzlarich) Polich. She graduated from Melcher High School in 1941, and went to Des Moines where she worked three years during World War II at the Des Moines Ordnance Plant.

In Des Moines she met Belvany Gene Jones on a blind date in February 1945. They married Aug. 25, 1945, in Des Moines and moved to New London, Conn., where her husband would finish his tour of duty in the United States Navy. The couple then moved to Haskell and lived with his parents until they moved to Muskogee after Gene found work as a laundry truck driver and then as a police officer.

While in Muskogee, she was heavily involved in her church and civic affairs, school activities and summer league baseball. She worked for 10 years in the retail business until 1967 when they moved to McAlester due to her husband’s new position with the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation.

While in McAlester, she continued to be involved in the many social, civic and church activities. She and her husband spent much time with their grandchildren and taking trips around the country. They were members of the First Baptist Church.

She is survived by her son, David Jones, and wife, Connie, of Crowder; grandchildren, John and Tammy Jones, of McAlester, and Kerri and Greg Cecil, of Crowder; great-grandchildren, Conner Jones, of McAlester, and Abigail Cecil and Erin Cecil, of Crowder; sisters, Wilma Hansaker, and husband, Jake, and Arlene Wilson, of Melcher, Iowa; brother, William and Linda Polich, of Rochester, Minn.; brother-in-law, Charles Jones, and wife, Barbara, of Wagoner, and many nephews, nieces, and cousins

She was preceded in death by her father, Joseph Polich, in 1930; mother, Pauline Polich, in 1990; stepfather, William Polich, in 1966; brother, Rudolph Polich, in 1970, and husband, Belvany Gene Jones, in 2009.
