McALESTER — Virginia Kathryn Sam, 78, of McAlester, died April 17, 2014.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Monday, April 21, at Chaney’s Memorial Chapel, McAlester, with the Rev. Roy Prince and Choctaw Councilman Bob Pate officiating. Interment will follow at Ash Creek Cemetery, in the Ash Creek Community. Services are under the direction of Chaney-Harkins Funeral Home of McAlester.

A dinner for the family will be provided at 11 a.m. Monday at the Choctaw Nation Community Center in McAlester.

She was born Feb. 14, 1936, in McAlester, to Jefferson Lee and Annie (Ensharkey) Hancock. She graduated high school from the Eufaula Boarding School and married Louie Sam on Oct. 17, 1958, in McAlester. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and spent her life caring for her family. She enjoyed listening to music, spending time with her grandchildren and enjoyed going for car rides.

She is survived by her children: Donna Watson, of McAlester; Esther Gill, of Ada: Michael Sam, of Ada; Cynthia Sam-Vogelsang and husband, Dr. Glenn Vogelsang,  of Roswell, N.M.; Richard Sam and wife, Cheryl, of McAlester, and Laura Warrior and husband, Louis, of Ada; grandchildren: Jennifer Watson, Hayden Gill, Kathryn Gill, Jeffrey Sam, Heather Sam-James, Jason Sam, Jordan Barnes, Stephanie Higgs and Karena Higgs; great-grandchildren Pakanli Ramsey and Nayukpa Ramsey; brothers and sisters: Lucille Jameson, of Crowder; Solomon Hancock, of Ada: Jean Cameron, of McAlester; Jurline Santine, of McAlester, and Walter Amos, of Ada; and special friend and caregiver, Roxie Whitelance, of McAlester.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Louie Sam, on May 4, 2007; parents, Jefferson and Annie Hancock; brother, Doyle Hancock; and sisters, Evelyn Hancock and Betty Karr.

Pallbearers will be Tim Cameron, Robbie Karr, Matthew Sam, Mark Sam, Douglas Sam and Wade Cantrell.

Honorary pallbearers are Randy Sam, Robert Beck, Rick Battiest, Ronnie Watson, Anthony “Punkin” Sam, Clifford “Beagle” Sam, Jr. and Marvin Sam.
