Bonnie Jean Jeffrey,

McALESTER — Bonnie Jean Jeffrey, 87, died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012, in Wilburton.

Graveside services were today at Center Point Cemetery in Wilburton with the Rev. Willard Francis officiating. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Jones-Harkins Funeral Home of Wilburton.

Born July 7, 1925, in Wilburton, she was the daughter of C.L. and Vera Townes Newsom. She married D.H. Jeffrey, also of Wilburton, on June 26, 1942, in McAlester.

Jean was baptized in the RLDS Church and later in life she attended the Church of Christ in Wilburton.

She graduated from Wilburton High School in 1944. She continued her education at Eastern Oklahoma A&M College and received her masters degree from Southeastern Oklahoma State College in Durant. She also studied at the University of Mexico, University of Oklahoma, University of Texas and Texas Southern University.

She taught for 29 years starting in Wilburton, briefly teaching in Friona and Perryton, Texas, and completed her teaching career in Wilburton. During this tenure, she taught speech, drama, English, journalism and Spanish. She directed the Christmas Candlelighting Program for many years along with numerous plays and speech contests.

She was a charter member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary Post No. 3649 of Wilburton.

During the early 1960s, she owned Janell’s, an exclusive dress shop in Wilburton.

She had polio as a 2-year-old child and developed a rare disorder known as progressive supranuclear palsy in the final years of her life.

She is survived by three children, Earl Autry and wife, Claudia, of Wilburton, Geral Elaine Storie and husband, Paul Ray, Marshall, Texas, and Johnny Charles Jeffrey and wife, Ellen, of Wilburton.

Also, eight grandchildren, Amy Storie McMahan and husband, Sonny, Paul Storie and wife, Carla, Tiffany Jeffrey Layton and husband, Rowdy, Lane Jeffrey, Latt Jeffrey and wife, Lizzie, Amy White Fair and husband, Steve, Jessica DeHart and Jeremy Askew.

And, eight great-grandchildren, Regan, Mason, Alex, Aubrey, Landry, Lucas, Christian and Alayna, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; twin brothers, Earl and Geral Newsom, and sister, Ella Mai Maxwell.

Honorary pallbearers were Vernon Bullard, Vic Bullard, Bud Bloxham, Kenneth Groggins, Jay Gregg and Don Garriott.
