James Harley Short, 76, of McAlester, died Monday, Oct. 22, 2012, at his home.
Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Faith Tabernacle Church in McAlester with the Rev. Steven Smith officiating.
Arrangements are under the direction of Bishop Funeral Service of McAlester.
He was born March 18, 1936, in McAlester. He had lived in Iowa and returned to Oklahoma in 1976.
He married Helen Adams on May 26, 1956, in McAlester. He owned and operated a welding and mechanic shop for many years. He had a remarkable talent for welding and was a great mechanic.
He liked to hunt, but loved to fish. The last few years he did his hunting by watching deer from his back porch.
He was a member of Faith Tabernacle Church in McAlester.
Survivors include his wife, Helen (Adams) Short, of the home; daughters, Kathy Earp and husband, David, of McAlester, and Vicky Long and husband, Tim, of McAlester; son, James Short Jr. and wife, Angela, of McAlester.
Also, eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren, and sisters, Sara Hicks, of Crowder, Ann Zachary, of Stuart, Patricia Scott, of McAlester, and Della Brown and husband, Manuel, of Wilburton.
He was preceded in death by his father, Willie E. Smith; mother, Polly (Short) Smith-Berry; son, Tracy Short; sister, Frances Maynard; maternal grandparents, Sarah Short and Willie Short, and paternal grandmother, Emmaline Johnson.
