McALESTER — Pauline Cates, 90, of Arpelar, died Monday, Aug. 26, 2013, at her home.

Private memorial services will be held by the family. Arrangements are under the direction of Bishop Funeral Service of McAlester.

Born July 14, 1923, in Pittsburg, she was the daughter of Rosie Lee and Elvy William Stiles. She married John L. Cates on Nov. 2, 1940, and he preceded her in death in 1998.

As a young couple they left Oklahoma in 1941 and moved to California where they began their family. They remained in California until 1977 when they returned to Oklahoma.

She was a faithful member of Cornerstone Community Church of Arpelar.

She was a homemaker who enjoyed taking care of her home and family. She also enjoyed volunteer work in the community.

For many years she attended and worked in the Victory Park Soup Kitchen helping feed the hungry in the McAlester area. She enjoyed helping and encouraging people.

Survivors include a son, Gary Leon Cates and wife, Mary Ann, Alameda, Calif.; daughter, Carole Paulette Cates Crawford and husband, Tom, of Arpelar; granddaughter, Sarah Kathleen Cates Foltz and husband, Dan, Alameda; grandsons, John Hayden Cates, Maui, Hawaii, and Todd Owen Crawford and wife, Rebecca, of Latta, and great-grandchildren, Wil McKenzie Crawford, Elizabeth Ann Crawford, Sadie Cates Foltz and Calvin John Foltz.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Rosie Lee; her stepfather, J.I. Stipe; her oldest grandson, Thomas Leon Crawford, her husband, John L. Cates.
