McALESTER — Leroy Holt, 85, of Savanna, died Monday, April 1, 2013, at his home.

A celebration of life will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at Savanna First Baptist Church with the Rev. James Crowson officiating. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date at Savanna Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of Bishop Funeral Service of McAlester.

Born Aug. 19, 1927, in McCurtain, to Vernon and Lois Bray Holt, he was the first son of five children of a coal miner. He served with distinction in World War II.

His service in the United States Navy took him to Guam, where he was a medic’s aid making flights to battlefields to bring back the wounded.

After returning from the military, he married Mary Lee Holt. He was working as a coal miner in Oklahoma when he survived a cave-in.

He also worked as a truck driver, and 25 years as a master machinist at the U.S. Army Ammunition Depot.

Throughout his life, he was an avid pilot and experimental aircraft builder of both Thorpe and Long EZ airplanes. He and his wife were members of flying clubs and once he completed his Thorpe, they flew it to Oshkosh to be displayed.

He enjoyed writing songs for his dobro guitar and playing for friends and family.

He also took up square dancing as a member of both the McAlester Stompers and the Eufaula Lakers Square Dancing Club.

While square dancing, he met, and later married, Margaret Gillock Day, who cared for him until his death.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Holt, of the home; grandson, Chris Holt and wife, Lori, Oak Harbor, Wash.; granddaughters, Cara Strange and husband, Greg, Little Elm, Texas, Deanna Cascio and husband, David, Bella Vista, Ark., and Brittany Holt, of Coweta.

Also, great-grandchildren, Kelly Holt, Avery and Quentin Strange, and Jordan, Joshua and Justin Cascio, and stepchildren, Brian Day and wife, Sandra, of McAlester, Norm Day and wife, Wanda, of McAlester, Cheryl Miller and husband, Rick, Lafe, Ark., and Debra Galvin, of Krebs.

He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Mary Lee Holt; son, Gary Holt; daughters, Mona Lynch and Celia Holt; brothers, Ralph Holt, Ray Holt and Wayne Holt, and sister, Eula Dean Fling.
