Mildred Hodgens

McALESTER — Mildred Hodgens, 95, of Savanna, died Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2014, at her home.

Visitation will be today from noon to 8 p.m. at Chaney-Harkins Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church of Savanna, officiated by the Rev. Kyle Cummings and the Rev. Bob Kendrick.

Interment will follow at Savanna Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Chaney-Harkins Funeral Home, McAlester.

Born April 23, 1918, in Wister, she was the daughter of Sam and Nettie (Carpenter) Parker.

She was a graduate of McAlester High School’s class of 1935.

She was a 1951 graduate of Southeastern State College, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in education.

In 1940, she married Champ Hodgens in Coalgate.

She was very active in her community and in Pittsburg County.

She was a member and pianist at First Baptist Church Savanna, a member of the Pittsburg County Retired Educators Association, the Red Cross, the Elder Care board, the Democratic Club and the Savanna Board of Education.

She was a charter member of the Order of the Eastern Star 349 and Rebekah Lodge 357 and was active at the Savanna Senior Citizen’s Center.

She was an elementary teacher in Pittsburg County schools for 37 years. She taught at Hewitt, Kiowa, Pittsburg, and Harpers Valley, and retired from Savanna schools.

She is survived by her daughter, Kay Kloecker, of Hempstead, Texas; son-in-law Richard Rodgers, of Stillwater; sister-in-law Mary Jo Ohlemeir, of Wichita, Kan.; grandchildren, Dustin Rodgers and wife Yonnette, of Oklahoma City, Jill Maxwell and fiancé Marcos Zepeda, of Cypress, Texas, Jaclyn Roberts and husband Tarkan, of Georgetown, Texas, and Teria Lankford and husband Cody, of Sinton, Texas; and great-grandchildren Brianna and Brittney Rodgers, and Jolie and Cade Lankford.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Champ Hodgens; her daughter, Linda Rodgers, and her son-in-law, Billy Kloecker.

Pallbearers will be Joe Brown, Tom Reeder, Haskell Melton, Willie Virden, Don Capps and Ralph Barrier.

Honorary pallbearers will be Alvin Sutton, Gary Reeder, Reedis Buckner and James Hoover.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the First Baptist Church of Savanna, New Church Facility Fund, P.O. Box 293, Savanna, OK 74565, or Hospice of McAlester, P.O. Box 1333, McAlester, OK, 74502, or a favorite charity.
