Paul Thomas Yates

McALESTER — Paul Thomas Yates, 88, of McAlester, died Monday, April 15, 2013, at a local nursing center.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Bishop Chapel of Memories with Bill Burns officiating. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Memorial Park Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Bishop Funeral Service of McAlester.

Born Nov. 24, 1924, in Denison, Texas, he was the son of Paul and Willie Patterson Yates. At the age of 9, his mother married Paul Wininger and his family moved to the Crowder area where he attended Crowder Public School. He married Olga Adams on April 3, 1945, in Texas.

He joined the United States Army Air Corp on Feb. 3, 1946, serving until he received his honorable discharge on Feb. 2, 1949, having earned the rank of corporal.

He began his career at the U.S. Army Ammunition Plant shortly after moving to the McAlester area. He worked as an operator at the water treatment plant until his retirement.

After his wife preceded him in death in 1992, he later married Lela Clark in 1995. She also preceded him in death 2012.

He was a member of First Assembly of God Church in McAlester for more than 60 years.

He enjoyed camping, fishing, being outdoors, working on his lawn, watching birds and listening to blue grass music.

Survivors include his granddaughter, Lea and Bobby Richards, of McAlester; great-grandchildren, Madison and Chloe Richards, of McAlester; nephew, Carl Preston and Linda White, of Muskogee; great-niece, Jennifer Day, of Harrah; great-nephew, Chris White, of Edmond.

Also, children, Ann and Roy Justice, of McAlester, Barbara and Dan O’Daniel, of Bartlesville, Linda and Hal Johnson, of McAlester, and Jim and Judy Clark, Fort Smith, Ark.

And, grandchildren, Butch and Ginney Justice, Bob and Melissa Justice, Scott O’Daniel, Christy Short, Jeff and Michelle Johnson, Carol and Shane Pennington, Jimmy and Christina Clark, Jason and Melissa Clark and Julia and Jason Rose.

And, 23 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild, and numerous nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

He was also preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Willie Wininger; his daughter, Brenda Burns; granddaughter, Lisa Burns, and sister and brother-in-law, Dean and Carl White.

Pallbearers will be Hal Johnson, Roy Justice, Jim Clark, Dan O’Daniel, Shane Pennington, Butch Justice and Bob Justice.
