Leta Marjorie Bertha Hearod Howdeshell McNatt

McALESTER — Leta Marjorie Bertha Hearod Howdeshell McNatt, 89, of McAlester, died Monday, May 5, 2014, at her home near McAlester.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Brumley-Mills Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Brumley-Mills Chapel with the Rev. Don Parr and the Rev. Gene Hankins officiating. Eulogy will be given by Carolyn McNatt. Burial will be at Shady Grove Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Brumley-Mills Funeral Home of McAlester.

Born Jan. 20, 1925, in Kiowa, Kan., she was the daughter of Chalmer and Bertha (Clingerman) Hearod. Due to family circumstances she was taken in and raised by William and Cynthia Howdeshell.

She started school in Carnegie and graduated from high school in Tuskahoma in 1944. She had lived in Oklahoma City, Kansas City, Mo., Soper, Poteau and Tuskahoma.

She married Everett Archie McNatt on July 20, 1945, in Oklahoma City. She came to McAlester from Tuskahoma in the early 1950s and had lived here since.

She was a charter member of Victory Park Baptist Church and was currently a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church.

Over the years, she was active in her daughter’s lives as a Brownie leader and in the Girl Scouts. She was also involved with the Indianola PTA for a number of years and was a member of Indian Nation CB Club. She had worked as a seamstress at Elsing and Henson Kickernick.

In her spare time she enjoyed sewing and gardening, tending to her pets and spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include two daughters, Carolyn McNatt and her partner, Willie Hill, of McAlester, and Sherry McNatt Sparks, of McAlester; five grandchildren, Bryan Johnson, Jake McNatt, Christopher Walker, Jami Walker and Michael Hill; four great-grandchildren, Tyler Walker, Makayla McNatt, Jake D. McNatt and Reid Patrick Johnson.

Also, a niece raised as her sister, Lucille Nix Dighton Summers; foster son, Elgin Baylor; honorary daughter, Daisy McLaughlin and husband, John; sisters-in-law, Jane McNatt and Velma Howdeshell.

And, nieces and nephews, Danny and Barbara McNatt, Dennis Johnson, Rick and Cathy McNatt, Mark Johnson, Patsy and Mark Mellow, Tina McFerrin, Ken McNatt, Sharon Hovendick, Elaine and Martin Welch, Lanita Bristow, Sadonna Hastings, Marie Tucker Cordray, Wayne Howdeshell, Robin Hackler, Richard McIntosh and Moninya and Brent Mulder, and special friends, Barbara Maynard Mize, Wilma Bullard, Ella Armstrong Bradley and Ralph Fenwick.

She was preceded in death by her parents and stepparents, Chalmer and Bertha Hearod, and William and Cynthia Howdeshell; her husband, who died on July 21, 1987; sisters, Dorothy Hastings and Annie Nix (Howdeshell), Mary Howdeshell and Grace Sumners; brothers, Gid, Lee, Ralph, Bill and James Howdeshell; nephews, Herman Howdeshell and Stephen Hastings; a niece, Patty McNatt Hackler; brother-in-law, Lee K. McNatt, and special friends, Imadeen Meltabarger, Louise McElyea Pilgrim, Gene Bell, Leona Coats Johnson, Margie McCoy, Jack Berry, Bill Hanes, Virginia McIntosh and Juanita “Tootsie” McIntosh Lanning.

Pallbearers will be Mike Heineke, Michael Walker, Blake Hackler, Brandon Hackler, Brayden Hackler, Robbie Womack, Jeremy Nabors and Timmy Martin.

Honorary pallbearers will be Wayne Mize, Jerry Steidley, Doug Steidley, Alan Lay, Marty Briggs, Fred Bess, B.J. “Bunny” Long, Bobby Long and Charles Woods.

Memorials may be made to Shady Grove Missionary Baptist Church.
