Submitted report

McALESTER — Evelyn Mae Bowman of Canadian died Saturday, August 3, 2013 at St. John Medical Center in Tulsa at the age 82.

Evelyn was born May 15, 1931 in Hanna, Oklahoma to Walter and Bessie (Armer) Taylor.  At an early age she started working on the family farm picking cotton.  She started school when she was five years old at the Hanna School one-room school house.  She would walk to school with her brothers and sisters five miles one-way.  Evelyn graduated from Hanna High School with the Class of 1948.  Following High School, Evelyn worked as a telephone operator for Southwestern Bell Telephone until she met the love of her life, Bob Bowman.  Evelyn met Bob on the side of the highway to Hanna after he was hauling watermelons and his truck broke down on the side of the road.  They married on April 28, 1956 in the Okmulgee County Courthouse.  The ceremony was quick because Bob had to get back to work on the family farm.  Evelyn then became a mother and homemaker when the two of them made their home in Wichita, Kansas.  Following Bob’s career with Boeing Aircraft they later moved to Altus, OK, Bossier City, LA and then to McAlester and back to the family homestead in Canadian in 1969.  She later worked at Komar and at KiBois Headstart as a Preschool Teacher but her main career was always taking care of her family.

Evelyn was the best Mama and wife that anyone could ask for. She spent countless hours taking care of her family.  She was a great cook!  She made the best fried chicken and cornbread in the county and always put a meal on the table, even in her last week of life.  She and Bob fed many people in their home over the years.  She was also an excellent seamstress.  Evelyn could make any type of garment and sewed evening gowns for her sister, and doll and Barbie clothes for Peggy and made all of Peggy’s clothes when she was growing up.  When her granddaughter, Fallon, was born she began to make many quilts and attire for her.  She made Cabbage Patch outfits for her favorite doll and matching outfits for Fallon and Sharla.  Throughout the years she even made dog clothing for the family pets.

Everyone knew her love for reading and would give her sacks and boxes of books.  She instilled that love of books into Peggy at an early age by reading to her and taking her to the library weekly.  She was Fallon’s first teacher and taught her to read and write before she started pre-school.

She enjoyed attending Canadian High School basketball games.  For more than 40 years she and Bob almost never missed a game at home or away.  In her later years, she became an OKC Thunder fan and spent her last birthday at a Thunder game.

Evelyn also enjoyed going to concerts and listening to country music.

She was a pillar of strength to all who knew her and will be missed by many people, young and old.

Evelyn is survived by her husband, Bob, of 57 years, of the home; daughter, Peggy DeFrange and husband, Ricky, of Krebs; granddaughter, Sharla DeFrange, of Krebs; great-grandson, 7 Nave; 1 brother, Charles Taylor and wife, Melva, of McAlester; brother-in-law, Dan Pipino, of McAlester; sisters-in-law, Betty Allen, of Shawnee, KS, Eddie Cadenhead, of Ft.
