Rita Marie DeFrange, 80, of McAlester, died Friday, June 8, 2012, at Mitchell Manor Convalescent Center.
A Rosary will be recited 7 p.m. Sunday at Chaney’s Memorial Chapel. The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. John the Evangelist Church officiated by the Rev. Leonard Higgins.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Chaney Harkins Funeral Home.
Born April 7, 1932, in McAlester, she was the daughter of Sylvester and Josephine (Crispi) DeFrange. She graduated from St. John’s High School with the Class of 1949 and began teaching in the McAlester area during the 1971-1972 school year.
She was a teacher for 36 years and was chosen as “Teacher of the Year” in 1994 before retiring that year.
She enjoyed teaching, sewing, quilting, crafting, reading and shopping.
She was a member of Kappa Kappa Iota and the McAlester Fortnightly Club. She was also a member of St. John the Evangelist Church.
She is survived by two sisters, Donna Lewis and husband, David, of Krebs and Sylvia Stizza and husband, Robert, of McAlester; two brothers, Joseph DeFrange and wife, Virginia, of Stephen City, Va., and David DeFrange and wife, Frances, of North Brunswick, N.J.; 10 nieces and nephews, Adrianne Pastore, Joanna Nichols, Rita DeFrange, David DeFrange II, Alicia DeFrange, Christina Walker, Derek Fassino, Tony Stizza, Phillip Stizza and Monica Shannon; numerous great-nieces and great-nephews and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Josephine and Sylvester DeFrange.
Pallbearers will be Tony Stizza, Phillip Stizza, Michael Stizza, Tyler Shannon, Joe Massaro and Adam Stizza.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Benedictine Sisters, St. Joseph Monastery, 2200 S. Lewis Avenue, Tulsa, 74114.
