Charles 'Charlie' Coppenger

McALESTER — Charles “Charlie” Coppenger, 78, Quinton, died Thursday, Feb. 27, 2014, in Oklahoma City.

Family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Bishop Funeral Service.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bishop Funeral Service with the Rev. George Mantooth officiating.

Burial will follow at Memory Gardens Memorial Park Cemetery. Military Honors by the Robert B. Thomas, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1098

Arrangements are under the direction of Bishop Funeral Service.

Born to Charles A. and Alice L. (White) Coppenger in Oct. 24, 1935, in Wilburton. He served in the U. S. Navy aboard the USS Buck, San Diego, Calif. He held a federal position at the McAlester Army Ammunition Plant from 1957 to 1988. He was deputy sheriff in Pittsburg County under sheriffs Bullett, Knight and then Hass from 1960 to 1966. He served as a deputy under Steve Burros and Snookie Ameranto, and for Haskel County under Jim Terrel.

He was a police officer in Quinton for three years. He was the exalted Ruler (Elks) BPOE No. 533, a Boy Scout Master for five years. He coached Boys Club Basketball for three years. He was a member of the American Legion. He coached Miss Girls Basketball for one year 1986. He was elected to the city council in Quinton for a year then retired due to his health.
