McALESTER — Bill Salyers, 68, of McAlester, died Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2014, at his home.

The family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Bishop Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Lakewood Christian Church with the Rev. Cliff House and Rusty Hudelson officiating. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Bishop Funeral Service of McAlester.

Born Oct. 20, 1945, in McAlester, he was the son of Roy Lee and Betty Maxine (Lewis) Salyers. He grew up in McAlester and graduated in the Class of 1963. He later attended Eastern Oklahoma State College earning his associates degree.

On Jan. 3, 1967, he joined the United States Army National Guard. He was trained as a medic at Fort Sam Houston earning very high points and graduating at the top of his class as a medical corpsman.

He returned to McAlester and married Lyn Thomas on Oct. 24, 1969, in Atoka. He received his honorable discharge on Dec. 31, 1971, and began his career at the United States Army Ammunition Depot. He worked as an engineering technician for special weapons, earning numerous awards and commendations for his work. He retired in 2002 due to illness.

He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and family. He also enjoyed golfing and taking hunting trips with his son.

He was a member of Lakewood Christian Church.

Survivors include his wife Lyn Salyers, of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Natalie and Andrew Hamilton, of Yukon; son and daughter-in-law, Anthony and Tamara Salyers, of McAlester.

Also, grandchildren, Taylor Cash and husband, Jeremy, Kaylie Hamilton, Emmalyn Hamilton, Caden Salyers, Treyton Salyers and Hunter Lee Salyers; great-grandchild, Jayden Cash; father and mother, Roy and Betty Salyers, of McAlester.

And, sisters and brother-in-law, Barbara and Bob Monto, of McAlester, and Donna Scrivner and Rick Buckner, of McAlester; mother-in-law and father-in-law, B.W. and Kathryn Thomas, of McAlester; brothers-in-law, Tom Thomas and wife, Shelia, of McAlester, and Bill Thomas and wife, Joyce, of Shady Point, and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

Pallbearers will be Chris Martin, Harden Hassell, Frank Autrey, Ron Kirkpatrick, L.E. Glover and John Silva.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Kern Jackson, Steve Otis and the graduates of McAlester High School Class of 1963.

Memorials may be made to Lakewood Christian Church Building Fund.
