Leonard Junior Luna, 76, of McAlester, died Monday, Jan. 13, 2014, at McAlester Regional Health Center.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Fort Gibson National Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by Tinker Air Force Base Honor Guard. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Brumley-Mills Funeral Home of McAlester.
Born Jan. 8, 1938, in Stuart, he was the son of Silas and Johnie Marie Luna. He joined the Oklahoma National Guard (45th Division) at the age of 16. He later transferred to the United States Army Reserve and then active duty in the U.S. Air Force, where he rose to the rank of master sergeant after 22 years of service. He was awarded seven commendation medals, the Bronze Star and many more awards.
After retiring from the Air Force he graduated with an associate degree from Eastern Oklahoma State College in Wilburton and then attended East Central University in Ada, where he received his B.A. degree in English education. He taught English at El Reno High School before retiring and moving back to McAlester. He enjoyed his students and talked favorably of that experience.
He was an avid fisherman, sports fan and gardener.
Survivors include his sons, Michael Luna, Fayetteville, Ark., and Frank Luna, of Keota; daughter, Angie Thompson, of McAlester; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Paula Marie Luna, of Coalgate, and Gloria James, of McAlester; brother-in-law, Leland James, and favorite nephew, Billy James.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Silas and Johnie Marie Luna; son, Gerald Luna, and nine siblings.
