Frank C. “Sam” Mason

Former Vice-mayor Frank C. “Sam” Mason, 82, died Friday, July 11, 2014, at his home in McAlester.

A memorial graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Monday, July 14, 2014, at the North McAlester Cemetery in McAlester with Dr. Tim Russell officiating.

He began his professional career specializing in construction testing and inspections and was employed by Curry Engineering, Oklahoma Testing Laboratory, and Breisch Engineering in eastern Oklahoma, but he enjoyed nothing more than the freedom of flight he experienced as a private pilot. He transitioned from pastime to profession, first as a certified flight instructor for Spartan School of Aeronautics, and finally as a corporate jet pilot for Getty Oil Company and William Wrigley Jr. Company having traveled around the world before retiring to McAlester where he was born on February 25, 1932.

Solitary by nature and temperament, Sam spent his retirement years gardening, traveling in his RV, working occasionally for Red Ark Development and Breisch Engineering, and reconnecting with his best friends; Tommy Moore and Don Jennings.  He was a member of the First Baptist Church of McAlester and he proudly served his community and his constituency as McAlester’s Ward 6 City Councilor for two terms, September 2005 to March 2010 and November 2010 to December 2013, serving as Vice-Mayor in his final term of office.

He is survived by his wife of thirty years, Lynda (Moore), of the home; son, Sam Mason, of Orange City, Florida; daughter, Stacey (David) Bayles, and granddaughter, Kelly Bayles, of Tulsa; stepchildren, Jade (Doreen) Oldham, of McAlester, Melody Kinnamon (Steve), of Collinsville, David Perkins, of Lugoff, South Carolina, and Toni Perkins of McAlester; nine grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren including Kailey Wilson. He is survived by a brother, Michael Mason, of Wichita, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Matt C. and Florence (Fischer) Mason; brother, Lt. Col. Benton Mason; and sisters; Daisy Griffin, Marie Kirby, Helen Davis, and Dorothy Mason.
