George K. ‘Sarge’ Wiley

McALESTER — George  K.  “Sarge”  Wiley, 96, of Savanna, died Thursday, Jan. 23, 1014, at his residence.

Visitation is from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.. Monday at Bishop Funeral Home in McAlester.

Graveside services are set for 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Savanna Cemetery in Savanna with the Rev. Kerry Kirkhart officiating. Interment will be at the Savanna Cemetery. Services are under the arrangement of Bishop Funeral Home.

He was born on Dec. 12, 1917, in Russell, Iowa to Elmer W. and Rachel Murray Wiley. He attended schools in Rushville, Mo. He joined the United States Marine Corps when he was 22 and served during World War II and the Korean War. He was one of the first to fight in the Pacific with “A” Battery, 10th Marines, 2nd Marine Division during WW II.  On his return he met a woman marine, Staff  Sgt. Gene Louise Brown in San Francisco. They married on Jan. 15, 1947, in Willington, N.C.

He was also involved during the Korean War in 1950. After several moves he was transferred to the U.S. Naval Ammunition Depot in McAlester and was Guard Chief of Marines Barracks. He retired after 23 years of service and settled in Savanna. He enjoyed  hunting and fishing most of his life.

Survivors include his wife, Gene Wiley, of the home; tow sons, Wayne K. Wiley. of Savanna, and Michael P. Wiley, of Lebo, Kan.; a sister, Fern Paxton, of Kansas City, Kan.;  two grandchilden, Brian Wiley and Leslie R. Wiley; four great-grandchildren, Stormy, Ryder, Hunter and Austin, and numerous neices and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, four brothers, five sisters and a daughter-in-law, Deanna G. Wiley.

Active pallbearers are Wayne Wiley, Michael Wiley, Brian Wiley, Donald Capps, Reedis Buckner, Lynn Barlow and Jimmy Ulibarri.

Honorary pallbearers are all his hunting and fishing buddies and friends.

    Heaven opened its gates for Bette Jo Williams, 84, on Saturday, July 19, 2014, following a brief illness with pancreatic cancer. Bette lived in McAlester, OK, for 60 years. She moved to Edmond, OK, two months ago in order to be closer to her sons and family members. Bette was born on the family farm near Washington, OK, on March 11, 1930.
