Oben Kenneth House

McALESTER — Oben Kenneth House, 85, of Glen Rose, Texas, died Friday, July 26, 2013 at his home.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Shady Grove Cemetery in McAlester with Dan Banks of the Crowder Church of Christ officiating. Local arrangements are under the direction of Chaney-Harkins Funeral Home of McAlester, and Wiley’s Funeral Home in Texas.

Born April 22, 1928, in Indianola, he was the oldest son of 10 children born to William Oliver and Lula Mae House.

He married Ramona Fern High on Feb. 9, 1954, in Las Vegas, Nev., and she preceded him in death in 1994.

The House family is from the McAlester area where they farmed and ranched. Being the oldest boy, he spearheaded the chores on the farm.

He joined the United States Army in September 1946. He served during the Korean War, feeding the troops as a master chef. He was stationed in Japan for six years. He was honorably discharged in June 1952. He had achieved the rank of sergeant.

The family all moved to the central coast of California in the 1950s. It was there that he began working for Johns Manville in Lompoc, Calif. He retired from JM in 1983, after 30 years.

He was an excellent mechanic and worked in the garage. He served many years as the secretary and treasurer for the International Chemical Workers Union Local 146.

He was also a farmer, rancher and avid horseback rider. After moving to Glen Rose, Texas in 1985, he worked on his small ranch and for others as a ranch hand.

He was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ. There he taught adult bible study classes for 20 years. He was a member of the Tolar Church of Christ in Tolar, Texas.

Survivors include two adopted daughters, Anna Young and Diana House; his children Raymond House and Linda Steinberger; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren, and his siblings, Wanda Haley, Curtis House, Zelma Pitts, Eldon House, Dale House, and the twins, Athel House and Ethel Johnson.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Kathy Harmon; his brothers and sisters, Charles House and Lynn House.

Memorials may be made to any organization serving abused children.
