Earl L. Harris Sr., 82, of Canadian

McALESTER — Earl L. Harris Sr., 82, of Canadian, died Wednesday, July 10, 2013, at the Jack C. Montgomery VA Medical Center in Muskogee.

The family will greet friends Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. at Chaney-Harkins Funeral Home.

Funeral services are Monday at 10 a.m. at Chaney Memorial Chapel with the Revs. Brent Jarrett and Keith Kinnamon officiating.  Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery with military honors provided by the Choctaw Nation Honor Guard.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Chaney-Harkins Funeral Home of McAlester.

He was born Sept. 10, 1930, in McAlester, to Benjamin H. and Minnie Mae (Pusley) Harris. He attended McAlester schools before serving in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper during WW II. He married JoAnn James and she preceded him in death in 1976. He worked as a carpenter, working with wood and glass and hand-made furniture. He retired from Underground Utilities in Longview, Texas, where he worked as a truck driver. He enjoyed wood-working and working with leather.

He married Tommie Bilberry on Sept. 13, 1996, in McAlester.

He attended the Canadian Shores Free Will Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Tommie Harris, of the home; daughters, Helen “Sissy” Wichert and husband, Greg, of Fairview, and Tommye “Snookie” of Canadian Shores; and sons, David E. Harris and wife, Debbie, of Fair Hope, Ala., Benjamin “Benji” Harris, of McAlester, and Earl “Buster” Harris Jr., of McAlester.

Also, grandchildren, Josh Harris, Jordan Harris, Michael Nazworth, Michelle Simms, Sherri Copeland, Kerri Copeland, Crystal Brown, Chris Short, Melissa and Terri, and Harley Harris; numerous great-grandchildren, six step-children, numerous step-grandchildren and other family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin and Minnie Harris; wife, JoAnn Harris; daughter, Katherine Ann Phillips and son-in-law, Shannon Phillips; grandchildren, Timothy and Tiffanie Phillips; brother, Kenneth E. Harris; and step-daughters, Linda Luman and Sandra K. Hale.

Pallbearers will be Mike Nazworth, Chris Short, Josh Harris, Jordan Harris, Matt Brown and Gully Taylor.

Honorary pallbearers will be Bryan Hardin, Zach Betchol and Joseph Adkins.
