John Wayne Tigert

McALESTER — John Wayne Tigert, 78, of Tool, Texas, died Tuesday, April  29, 2014, at East Texas Medical Center in Athens, Texas.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Ashland Cemetery Pavilion with O.C. Hawkins officiating. Burial will be at Ashland Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by Robert B. Thomas Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1098. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Bishop Funeral Service of McAlester.

Born Nov. 4, 1935, in Naples, Texas, he was the son of John William and Jewell Tigert. He graduated from Commerce High School in Texas and later from Claremore Junior College.

He was a longtime resident of McAlester. He married Carol Ann Bethune on May 27, 1974, and she preceded him in death in 2002. A few years later he moved to Tool to be near his daughter.

He worked for Oklahoma Department of Corrections at both Oklahoma State Penitentiary and Jackie Brannon Correctional Center, retiring after 20 years of service.

He retired from the United States Army after more than 20 years of service. He served in three wars beginning in Korea, followed by Vietnam and then Desert Storm. He served in military intelligence and also saw action in Panama Canal and Germany. He accepted a request to attend the Desert Storm Campaign as a advisor at 55 years of age.

He loved spending time with his family, enjoying cookouts, pitching horseshoes, bowling, bingo, Oreo cookies and Coca-Cola. He was also a talented artist and was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include one daughter, Darla Ferguson, Tool; three sons and daughters-in-law, Ken and Denise Bethune, of McAlester, Rick and Debbie Bethune, North Richland Hills, Texas, and Randy Bethune, Tool.

Also, one sister, Connie Allen, Dallas, Texas; grandchildren and spouses, Matthew and Jennifer Childers, Martin and Cristin Childers, Katie Bethune, Emily Bethune, Brook and Stan Brooke Bethune, and Christopher and Angel Ferguson; great-grandchildren, Madison Childers, Alyssa Childers, Aubrey Childers, Liam Childers, Bubba Ferguson, Travis Ferguson, Dodger Ferguson, Holly Wilson, and Haven Wilson, and one very special friend, Jan Wood.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Carol; three brothers, Oakley, William and Jimmy Tigert; a son-in-law, Wayne Ferguson, and four great-grandchildren, Isabelle, Riley, Garrett and Gavin Childers.

Pallbearers will be Ken Bethune, Rick Bethune, Randy Bethune, Matthew Childers, Martin Childers and Christopher Ferguson.
