Vera Elaine Noah Holly, 70, died Monday, April 22, at her home.
Services are today at 2 p.m. at the Wilburton High School
Auditorium. Arrangements are under the direction of Waldrop Funeral Home.
She was born Nov. 8, 1941, to C.H. “Snooks” and Vallie Noah at home in Boggy, near Red Oak. She was the youngest of four children. She attended Red Oak Schools, graduating in 1959, and married Melvin E. Holly that same year.
She taught Head Start at Lutie for two years before attending college to earn a teaching degree. While attending college, she worked at the Congloeum Carpet plant and Handy Stop No. 1. After receiving her master’s degree from Southeastern Oklahoma State College, she began working at Whitesboro School teaching remedial reading. She also taught remedial reading at Haileyville Schools, where she coached basketball and was a cheerleading sponsor and bus driver. In 1982, she moved from Haileyville School to Panola Schools where she taught remedial reading and junior-high spelling, reading and history, coached fifth- and sixth-grade boys and drove a school bus.
She retired after 26 years of teaching, remaining active by substitute teaching at Wilburton, Panola and Buffalo Valley.
She enjoyed photography, working on her father’s 1972 Chevrolet truck with her grandson and teaching her grandson to drive.
She was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church where she was a church clerk and Sunday school teacher. She was also active with the Wilburton Round Up Club, of which she was past president; Panola Livestock Booster Club, Red Oak Alumni Association and FFA, of which she was an honorary state member and honorary member of the Stringtown, Panola and Wilburton clubs.
She is survived by her husband, Melvin E. Holly; children, Wallena Dominic and Susie Holly-Bull, of Wilburton, and Dennis Holly and James and Robin Holly, of Stillwater; grandchildren J.J. Bull, Cody L. Bull and Connie E. Holly; special friends Betty Lowder and Justin and Jonathan Lowder, of Wilburton, Bjorn Bartles, of Germany, Casper Aberjo, of Denmark, JoAnn Back, Mavis Evans and Shirley Sonaggera, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by a son, Ellis L. Holly; parents C.H. and Vallie Noah; a sister, Syble Smallwood; brother-in-law Howard Smallwood; brothers Harold Noah and Ralph Noah; sister Lillian Noah, and special friend Bill Lowder.
Pallbearers will be Jimmy Booth, Michael Ridgway, Rodney Knight, Bradley Knight, Lane Knight and Ed Blair. Honorary pallbearers are Joe Bray, Jim Thornton, Doug Perryman and Kenny Schiwarts.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Kiamichi Baptist Assembly or the Oklahoma Baptist Children’s Home.
