George 'Pappy' Hobbs

McALESTER — George “Pappy” Hobbs, 69, of Eufaula, died April 17, 2013 at the Jack C. Montgomery VA Center in Muskogee.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Kelley Memorial Chapel. The Rev. J. Ingram will officiate. Burial will follow at Bower Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Hunn Black & Merritt Funeral Home & Crematory.

He was born Feb. 21, 1944 in Bellwood, W.V., to Andrew James and Edna (Hunter) Hobbs. He attended church at the Sewell Valley Baptist Church in Rainelle, W.V.

On May 24, 1961, he enlisted in the United States military. George served more than 22-1/2 years combined in the Air Force and Army, where he worked as an ammunition and explosivesives technician and was also a qualified instructor. He taught cadets and other soldiers about different hand grenades.

During his time in the military, he received the Air Force Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the Air Force Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Presidential Unit Citation, the McAlester Army Ammunition Plant Commander’s Pride Award, and the Commander’s Outstanding Achievement Award, as well as many others.

He also worked as a machine mechanic for DuPont and Rainbow Bread. He was stationed at McAAP in 1990 and 1991. He retired from the United States Army on Feb. 21, 2004.

On June 7, 1991, he married Jeanne Marie Mosley in Sherman, Texas.

He is survived by his wife, Jeanne Hobbs, of the home; two sons, George Hobbs Jr.,  and Brian Hobbs and wife, Sally, both of Boise, Idaho; three daughters, Heather Spencer and husband, Aaron, of Broken Arrow, Tina Rollins and husband, Chris, of Cleveland, Ohio, and Darlene Marlin and husband, Al, of Dover, Del,; one brother, James Hobbs, of Rainelle, W.V.; one sister, Patsy Frolich, of Davenport, Iowa; 17 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Edna Hobbs, and one daughter, Honey Lynn.
