Paul Helms, 84, of McAlester, died Wednesday, March 19, 2014 in McAlester.
Visitation for family and friends will be today from 2 to 3 p.m. at Brumley-Mills Funeral Home.
A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Brumley-Mills Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by Nathan Batty and John England. Interment will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery with military honors provided by V.F.W. Post 1098 of McAlester.
Born July 29, 1929, at Bugtussle, he was the son of Jake and Ada (Dobbs) Helms.
He attended school in Bugtussle and graduated from Crowder High School.
After his education, he entered the U.S. Army and served during the Korean conflict, stationed overseas. He received the Korean Service Medal with two bronze service stars and the UN Service Medal.
He married the former Viola C. Mitchell in McAlester on Nov. 5, 1955.
He was employed by the G.S.A. and worked at the federal building in McAlester where he received several awards. He retired in 1995.
He was a member of C and Tyler Church of Christ and was also engaged in cattle ranching.
He enjoyed fishing, gardening and being with his family and grandchildren.
He is survived by three daughters, Pauletta James and husband, Scott, of Hartshorne, Loretta England and husband, James, of Bugtussle, and Carletta Creech and husband, Alan, of Sheridan, Ark.; one sister, Pearlene Cathey and husband, Harold, of Indianola; one brother, Alvin Helms and wife, Wilma, of Pampa; six grandchildren, Letta Guyer and husband, Ryan, of Shady Grove, Melinda Miller and husband, Jonathan, of Okmulgee, John England and wife, Lindsay, of Ada, Melissa Standridge and husband, Ransy, of Bugtussle, Steven Reece, of Sheridan, and Samantha Burgess and husband, Thaddeus, of Austin, Texas; great-grandchildren Colton, Michael, Andrew, Ashton, Joslyn, Brittney, Gracie, Triston, Anna, Payton and Arabett, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Viola C. Helms; his parents, Jake and Ada Helms; two sisters; four brothers, and one great-granddaughter.
Pallbearers will be Ralph Jernnigan Colton Mann, Michael Mann, Ricky Cathey, Jimmy Cathey and Miles Cathey.
