McALESTER — Dr. Frederick Henry “Fred” Smith

Fred Smith, of Peeramon, Queensland, Australia, formerly of McAlester, died Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013, in Cairns Base Hospital, after a brief illness.

He was cremated on Sept. 4 in Atherton, Australia. Arrangements are under the direction of Guilfoyles Funeral Service in Atherton, Australia.

Born May 20, 1929, in New York City, he was the son of Caroline and James Smith. He had two older brothers. He grew up in Vallejo, Calif. He left school after the ninth grade and worked various unskilled jobs before joining the United States Air Force in 1949. He served in Korea and quickly rose to the rank of senior master sergeant before retiring in 1969. He entered the USAF with a ninth grade education and left with a master’s degree. He went on to receive his doctorate in psychology. He taught at the tertiary level and worked in community health and hospitals, but mostly in prisons.

He was employed for many years by Oklahoma Department of Corrections at OSR, OSP and Jackie Brannon Correctional Center. He received many awards and recognition for his work, including employee of the year while at Jackie Brannon.

He lived in England, Germany, Libya and Australia. He also traveled extensively. He enjoyed reading, walking, jazz and classical music.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara, of the home; children, Zachary and Chelsea Smith, Melbourne, Australia; stepchildren, Michelle Manziano, Perchtoldsdorf, Austria, and Carey Smith, St. Louis, Mo.; sister-in-law, Corine Smith, Mesquite, Nev.; cousins, Christy Tipton, of Tulsa, and Cynthia Gonzales, Corte Madera, Calif.; lifelong friend, Arthur Marrero and wife, Sydney, Petaluma, Calif., and good friends from his prison service in Oklahoma.
