J.D. Saunders, Jr., 70, of McAlester, died Thursday, Jan. 23, at his McAlester residence.
Family visitation is from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Monday at Bishop Funeral Service. Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Tuesday with the Rev. Jim Gantt officiating at Bishop Chapel of Memories in McAlester. Interment will be at Ashland Cemetery in Ashland. Arrangements are under the direction of Bishop Funeral Service in McAlester.
He was born Sept. 3, 1943 in Oklahoma City, the son of Jefferson Davis Saunders, Sr. and Emily Faye (McDonald) Saunders. He attended Dibble and Putnam City Schools. He later worked for OG&E in Oklahoma City as a lineman for 16 years. In 1985, he moved to McAlester where he worked for Mills Ranch as a ranch hand and handyman. He also carried the message of recovery for 27 years. He enjoyed his family and cherished his time with them.
He adored his dog “Fella,” horse “Canyon” and Cat. He was a member of Last Chance Group of Alcoholics Anonymous and a member of the First Baptist Church of Ashland. He will be missed by his family and friends.
Survivors include his daughter, Tracey Saunders of Oklahoma City; a son, Brian Saunders and wife, Michelle, of Santee, Calif.; grandchildren Brian Saunders, Kaylee Saunders and Carson Saunders, all of Santee, Calif., longtime friend and companion, Renee Amason, of Ashland; sisters Montrose Templin and husband, Jerry, of Warr Acres; Joann Laub and husband, Myron of St. George, Utah; brother Terry Saunders and wife, Deborah, of Oklahoma City, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jefferson and Emily Saunders.
Active pallbearers are Bruce Hale, Isom Pickens, Keith Amason, John Durant, Delbert Amason and Neal Templin.
Honorary pallbearers are Terry Saunders, Jerry Templin, Myron Laub and grandson, Brian Saunders.
