Lovera's cheese wins World awards

Lovera’s Cheese Co. gains international recognition at the World Cheese Awards.

McALESTER — Lovera’s Cheese Co. gains international recognition at the World Cheese Awards.

“We sent five of our cheeses overseas to this global competition,” Lovera’s Cheesemaker Shawn Duffy said. “Our Caciocavera cheese received the gold place award in the mild provolone category.”

“Our Hickory Smoked Caciocavera was awarded the silver place in the smoked cheese category,” he said. “The latest addition to our line of fine Italian type cheeses ‘Batista,’ which is a caciocavallo style 50/50 blend of La Mancha goat’s milk and Jersey cow’s milk took the silver in the mixed milk category.”

Duffy said this was Lovera’s first year to enter cheeses in this international event.

He said, “it was with great honor and pride that we received the news of our awards.”

In August, Lovera’s cheese shop attended American Cheese Society Conference and Competition for the first time and brought home Second Place.

The World Cheese Awards, run by the UK’s Guild of Fine Food, is the largest and most respected competition of its type in the world, he said.

Duffy said this year it brought together 2,781 cheeses from 30 countries under one roof, making this the “Big Cheese” of international competitions.

He said many of the winning cheeses will now be available for sampling at a World Cheese Deli at BBC Good Food, which runs until Dec. 2.

He said the judges included cheese experts from the U.S., Spain, France, Italy, Belgium, Switzerland, Denmark, Germany, Greece, South Africa, Portugal and Russia.

The competition is global, with only 25 percent of entries from the U.K.

Others came from Ireland, New Zealand, the U.S., Spain, Croatia, Netherlands, Italy, Norway, France, Belgium, Austria, Sweden, Cyprus, Slovakia, Canada, Australia, Greece, Germany, South Africa, Switzerland, Portugal, Denmark and Russia, Duffy said.

Duffy said to learn more about the World Cheese Awards, visit www.finefoodworld.co.uk/wca.  Duffy said all are welcome to visit Lovera’s online at loverasmarket.com.

  • Don't blame voters for low turnout

Suppose nobody votes this year. On Nov. 4 the doors to the polling places are thrown open, and there isn't anyone in line. No absentee ballots are filed. No one litigates, charging either fraud or discrimination, because there weren't any voters.
It won't happen. But if it did, pundits and activists would surely blame public apathy for such a catastrophe. I'd name a different culprit: the major parties, their candidates and their acolytes in the news media.

Last month, 4- and 5-year-old brothers in New York quickly spent $65.95 in real money to buy virtual goods in Marvel's Run Jump Splash game on the family tablet. They were able to rack up the charges without entering a password. And for that, the boys' mother has joined a class-action lawsuit filed Tuesday against Google, accusing the company of deceiving consumers about its in-app purchase system, which critics say makes it too easy for kids to spend money on their Android devices.
