Boston bombing suspect killed, massive manhunt for second

Authorities identify them as brothers, 19 and 26, who grew up in Russia

BOSTON — A massive, block-by-block manhunt was underway Friday for a suspect in the Boston Marathon bombing after a bloody, chaotic night of gunfire that killed a second suspect and a campus police officer and wounded a transit policeman.

The dramatic events unfolded less than six hours after the FBI released video and photo images of the two unidentified suspects. They were later identified as brothers Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, natives of the Chechen region of Russia.

Tamerian Tsarnaev was killed in a shootout with police in the Boston suburb of Watertown. Emergency room doctors at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital said it appeared he had a bomb strapped to his body. They said he died of multiple gunshot and shrapnel wounds.

His younger brother, Dzhokhar, dubbed by the FBI as the suspect in the "white cap," fled the shootout on foot, setting off a police search that included hundreds of law enforcment offiicials and a warning to residents in the area to stay inside and lock their doors.

Officials shut down all subway, bus and commter rail service and told motorists to stay off the streets. Colleges in the area closed for the day.

Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis said the suspect on the run was armed with guns and explosive devices. "We consider him extremely dangerous," said Davis. "He is out to kill people."

The latest drama started Thursday night when police responded to a 7-11 convenience store robbery in Cambridge's Kendall Square near MIT. They later found an MIT police officer dead of multiple gunshot wounds in his cruiser.

A short time later police learned that the marathon bombing suspects had carjacked a Mercedes SUV on Memorial Drive in Cambridge, holding the driver hostage for 20 minutes before releasing him unharmed. A police pursuit of the SUV quickly ensued, with police and the suspects exchanging gunfire.

The chase came to a halt in Watertown, with police shooting down one suspect while the other fled. A transit police officer helping in the pursuit was seriously wounded in the firefight.

Authorities said the Tsarnaev brothers came to the United States in 2002 or 2003. They said the family had sought asylum. It was believed both brothers were legal residents of the country.
