Postal Service in the Senate spotlight

WASHINGTON — A Senate committee today will explore solutions for renewing and reforming the Postal Service. The service is trying to stay afloat in an increasingly digital world but lacks money to repay its debt of more than $15.9 billion, let alone meet a payment of $5 billion due to the U.S. Treasury on Monday.

The hearing will examine legislation that seeks to introduce pension and health-care reforms for postal workers and allow the eventual elimination of Saturday delivery. Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe will testify.
