Chamber to help host big rodeo event in November

PBR set to bring horse, bull action to Southeast Expo

McALESTER — A huge professional rodeo is coming to McAlester in November.

The Professional Bull Riders Association’s “Bucken Awesome” is coming to the Southeast Expo Center on Nov. 16, organizers say.

This will be the first big rodeo event since 2009 when the last Oklahoma State Penitentiary Prison Rodeo was held behind prison walls.

The prison rodeo was an annual McAlester tradition for 69 years that was discontinued in 2010 because of costs, officials said.

But unlike the prison rodeo, which was outdoors, the PBR event will be inside the Southeast Expo Center, according to Tanaye Harvanek, director of the McAlester Chamber of Commerce.

Harvanek said the McAlester Chamber partnered with the Choctaw Casino, Trophy’s Bar and Grill, McAlester Tourism, and the PBR to host the bull-riding extravaganza.

And she said an after-party is planned at the Choctaw Casino with recording artist Justin McBride and the riders.

Harvanek said some details are still being worked out.

“We know ticket prices will range from $10 to $125 but we haven’t finalized which locations will sell them,” Harvanek said.

“We should have all the information in the next few weeks.”

But the date is finalized, she said.

“Mark your calendars now for Nov. 16 and join us

to cheer on some of the top riders in the national PBR circuit,” she said.

The Southeast Expo Center is at  4500 W. U.S. Hwy. 270 in McAlester. For more information call the Chamber at 918-423-2550.
