McALESTER — Susanne Carney has coached McAlester’s cross country team for close to 20 years. But almost everything else about the 2013 squad seems new — new players, a new offseason training program, a new work ethic and a new team mentality.
With all that new stuff comes a new a goal: qualifying as a team to the state meet.
“This group, if they will keep on, I think we can go as a team,” Carney said Wednesday. “We have work to do, but I think that as a team we have a pretty good shot at qualifying if we can keep everybody healthy and eligible.”
The Buffs have been training for this new season throughout the summer, taking part in multiple road races and 5Ks. Carney said the team focused on building up its strength and conditioning over the summer, running anywhere from three to 13 miles each session.
Senior Noah Rose will captain the Buffs. Top runners also include senior Hank Brown, junior Sam Adams and his freshman brother Stone Adams.
