McALESTER — The Sapulpa Lady Chieftains scored 13 points off sets dumped over the net, sweeping all three games of Thursday’s match against the McAlester Lady Buffaloes, 25-9, 25-17, 25-17, at Bob Brumley Gymnasium in McAlester. McAlester opened its season with a loss, while Sapulpa evened its record to 1-1.
The Lady Chiefs’ clever use of their sets kept the Lady Buffs’ back row confused throughout the match. When the Lady Buffs played back, the Lady Chiefs dumped it into the center of the court. When the Lady Buffs moved up, the Lady Chiefs pushed it over their heads towards the back line.
Junior Ashley Martin led her team with six points scored off sets, adding in a kill and two aces. Martin did an excellent job of either setting low over the net just outside McAlester’s blockers or shooting it just above the blockers’ hands.
“We spend a lot of time working on her reading the difference and knowing when to dump it like that and when to hit the ball,” Sapulpa coach Brittany Kennedy said of Martin. “She’s really put it into play this last week.”
Martin helped steal momentum back after McAlester went on a 6-0 run in the second game to take a brief 6-4 lead, ending the run with a kill. With her team up 8-7, Martin set one over the net for a point, then did so again after a 4-0 McAlester run had tied the game 11-11.
