Cowboys fall at State

OKLAHOMA CITY —

Winning 27 games and reaching both the Class A state semifinals and championship game, the Kiowa Cowboys had already set three school records.

Ty Lazenby and the Glencoe Panthers made sure Kiowa's first state championship would have to wait at least another year.

Lazenby scored 37 points, leading the Panthers to a 57-39 win against the Cowboys in Saturday's Class A state championship at State Fair Park's Jim Norick Arena in Oklahoma City.

Glencoe finished its season a perfect 29-0 and repeated as state champion. Kiowa finished 27-5, including upset wins against top-ranked Fort Cobb-Broxton in the state quarter-finals and Hollis in the state semifinals.

“I've seen teams come down here that have never been here and win it, but I thought that had to play to our advantage a little bit,” Glencoe coach John Lazenby said. “They've been out here under the lights on championship Saturday, and you can get awe-struck.”

A 32-30 game late in the third quarter, Glencoe closed out the third on a 7-2 run. Ty Lazenby ran a backdoor cut, caught a pass from Jake Lazenby midair and laid it in for an alley-oop bucket, then Ty came away with a steal and turned it into a layup for a 36-30 lead.

Tristian McMath scored for Kiowa, but Ty knocked down a 3-pointer on the opposite end, then scored again on a layup right before the quarter ended.

“I love man-to-man because it opens up the lane for me to spread more,” Ty Lazenby said. “I forced a few things in the first half and just had to work through it and spread it out more and get them out of the lanes.”

The Panthers went on to score 9 more unanswered points early in the fourth quarter. Ty Lazenby scored the first 4 in that run, then Andrew Kuhn added 3 on an offensive rebound that led to a basket, foul and free throw.
