Fall baseball preview: Kiowa

By Matt Goisman

KIOWA — Most baseball coaches want at least one left-handed starting pitcher in their bullpen.

Kiowa coach Michael Stone has three: senior Clay Doyle, junior Brice Smith and sophomore Braeten Anders.

“I really expect a lot out of Clay Doyle,” Stone said. “He’s probably my No. 1 going into the year as far as pitching. He’s a lefty, plays center field for us. He’s picked up his velocity with his fastball, his offspeed pitches are getting a lot more command, and he developed a really good breaking ball in the offseason.”

“Brice, he’s a kid that’s going to start for us at first base. He played in the Sophomore Sunbelt (tournament) this summer. He’s a pretty offensive player, a power-hitting guy that’s probably going to bat 4-hole for us. ... He’s a left-handed kid as well, great fastball, really outstanding breaking ball, and getting command of his changeup.”

The Cowboys will start the fall with approximately 18 players, with decent numbers from each class year. From the seniors, also look for big years from starting second baseman Caden Shores and starting outfielder Johnny Allen.
