Lady Buffs edge Lady Hornets

McALESTER — McAlester's Bailey Dawkins’ drove in a key tie-breaking run in the bottom of the fourth, and the Lady Buffaloes hung on to beat the Stuart Lady Hornets, 4-2, Thursday at the Pittsburg County Softball Complex in McAlester.

McAlester coach Justin Bond batted all 14 of his Lady Buffs in Thursday’s game, subbing his bottom five in defensively throughout the game. While Bond’s seven- through 13-hole hitters couldn’t get on base, 14-hole hitter Bri Talbot drew a walk with one out in the bottom of the fourth and the score tied 2-2.

Talbot stole second base, then leadoff hitter Stacey Washington hit a grounder that ricocheted off Stuart shortstop Emilee Beck’s glove. Washington reached and Talbot got to third, but the ball rolled towards second baseman Megan Jernigen, who fielded it before Talbot could score.

That set the stage for Dawkins, who drove a pitch from Makayla Clark back up the middle to drive in Talbot and make it 3-2 Lady Buffs. Dawkins also doubled in the first inning and scored on an RBI groundout by Heather Morgano that made it 2-0.
