McALESTER — McAlester sophomore Dexter Brown finished strong at the 5A state golf tournament, shooting an 84 across the final 18 holes Tuesday at the Tulsa Country Club. Had he shot an 84 three times, he would’ve finished in the top 50 among all golfers at the tournament, and the top eight among golfers from non-qualifying schools.
Instead, Brown shot a 91 for the first 18 holes and a 92 for the second 18 Monday, finishing with a total of 267. He finished 13th among golfers from non-qualifiers, and 59th out of 76 overall.
“He got a little confidence out of it, especially in the back nine (holes),” Buffs golf coach Chris Zike said of Brown’s final 18.
Brown went to State with the Buffs last season, but this season could only qualify as an individual, shooting a 172 on April 29 at Shawnee. With seniors Drew House and Dexter’s older brother Addison Brown both graduating, Zike said he expects even greater contributions from Dexter next season.
