McALESTER — The McAlester Boys & Girls Club kicked off its spring baseball and softball seasons Monday, when 12 teams’ worth of 3- and 4-year-old boys and girls gathered at the Bud Hale Sports Complex for t-ball. Boys & Girls Club athletic director Terry Green said Tuesday that 437 kids ages 3 to 12 have signed up this spring, leading to 36 teams spread across seven different leagues.
A graduate of Stringtown High School, Green said he worked for the Boys & Girls Club for 18 years until leaving in 2007. He returned to the organization a month ago.
“I love the kids, and I’ve always been a sports guy,” Green said.
“My goals were to get the program back up.”
Green said that while 437 kids was a slight improvement over recent years, the Boys & Girls Club used to draw in more than 900. He attributed the drop-off to the growth of the Pittsburg County Little League and the OK Kids traveling teams.
