McALESTER — What a year for Lakewood Christian senior power forward John Perry. In just one season, Perry earned All-State and All-Conference honors while leading the Lions to a 31-12 record, helped the Lions win a state title in the Oklahoma Christian School Athletic Association, then was named all-tournament at the Tri-State Christian Tournament at Oklahoma Wesleyan University in Bartlesville — a prestigious invitational tournament that Lakewood also won.
To cap it all off, Perry became the first Lion to earn a basketball scholarship since 2008, signing with Mid-America Christian University on Thursday at Lakewood Christian School in McAlester.
Mid-America men’s basketball coach Willie Holley said he got his first taste of Perry at the OCSAA state tournament, which took place at MACU’s gymnasium in Oklahoma City. Holley said Perry will continue as a power forward for the Evangels, which compete in both the National Christian College Athletic Association and the Sooner Athletic Conference, a Division I conference in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.
With SAC Newcomer of the Year and Evangels starting power forward Angelo Lewis returning next year, Holley said Perry will have to earn his playing time while building physical size and strength.
