High school bowling league still open

By Matt Goisman

McALESTER — Playing high school sports usually comes with costs. Uniforms, equipment, travel — someone has to pay for all that, and usually its either the school or the player’s family.

School administrators know this. So when Rita Sanders started pitching the high school bowling league starting up at Great Balls of Fire in McAlester, many were reluctant to join in.

“They just don’t understand the concept of being free,” Sanders said Tuesday. “They think there’s always some kind of gimmick.”

But this league is free, at least for the schools and the bowlers. Use of the lanes and free shoe rentals have been donated by Great Balls of Fire, while team shirts have been donated by private sponsors.
