McALESTER — Hartshorne 40, Pocola 0:
When a team’s offense scores 40 points and its defense pitches a shut out, you’d think the coach would have nothing but good things to say.
But when that team has its sight set on a district title and possibly more — as the Hartshorne Miners do — even little mistakes become unacceptable.
“We jumped offsides a few times,” Hartshorne coach Bill Williams said. “I didn’t think our energy was where we needed to be.”
Whatever the Miners’ energy, they still pounced on the Indians, with Kolton Montgomery scoring on a 65-yard touchdown run on the Miners’ first play of the game.
"Offensively, they took away what we wanted to do with our inside run stuff,” Williams said. “I thought we adjusted well.”
Hartshorne freshman Troy Ray followed up Montgomery’s big play with one of his own, intercepting a Pocola pass and returning it 77 yards for a touchdown. By halftime, Hartshorne led 27-0.
“When you jump on somebody 27-0 halfway through the second quarter, you play to your competition sometimes,” Williams said. “We were never threatened, and we played like that.”
