Lakewood Christian wins state championship

McALESTER — For the Lakewood Christian Lions, the 2012-13 basketball season has been about proof. In going 28-12 so far this season despite playing much larger Class 4A, 3A and 2A schools, the Lions proved they could compete with anybody.

And in winning their second state title since the school formed in 2003, the Lions proved they could beat anybody as well.

Lakewood Christian went 4-0 in the Oklahoma Christian Schools Athletic Association class 2A state tournament, capping its run with a 72-42 win in the championship game against Liberty Christian on Feb. 16.

“It was really satisfying as a coach to sit back and look at what these kids have accomplished this season,” Lions coach Cully Stevens said Wednesday.

“We just kept playing with confidence and composure and it showed, and that’s why we won the game.”
