McALESTER — Downtown Detail hit the ball so hard, its hitters seemingly split the sky open.
A torrential downpour canceled Downtown Detail’s men’s league softball game against Scared Hitless on Tuesday at the Pittsburg County Softball Complex in McAlester.
Though a few droplets fell in the first inning, the heavy rains came at about the start of the second inning, and the game was canceled five batters later. Having already hit four home runs, Downtown Detail was beating Scared Hitless 19-1 when the game was canceled and likely would’ve needed to just get through the third inning before the run rule would’ve given Downtown Detail the win.
Dustin Smith led off the top of the first with a double to left, then scored on a grounder by Matt House that resulted in an error. Randy Alberson singled up the middle, then Colby Gibson crushed a three-run homer over the wall in right-center.
“I usually just try to catch them out in front and square them up,” Gibson said. “I’m really just looking out for something over the plate that I can pull.”
Gibson’s brother Casey Gibson followed Colby with a solo home run to almost the exact same spot, then Brian Clark reached on an error. Austin Ham grounded into a fielder’s choice at second, but David Thomas drilled a two-run homer to left for a 7-0 lead.
With the bases cleared, Chris Hill got to second on an error, then Josh Ham singled in Hill. Kevin Barnes singled to center, then Smith doubled to center for an RBI and a 9-0 lead.
House beat out an infield single, then Barnes scored on Alberson’s fielder’s choice at third base. Colby Gibson walked, then Casey Gibson cleared the bases with a double to deep center field that landed just a couple feet short of a grand slam.
