McALESTER — The Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association earlier this week announced soccer districts for the 2013-14 and 2014-15 school years. McAlester has been placed into District 5A-4 and is thus now eligible for the playoffs.

As a non-district team last year, the Buffaloes and Lady Buffaloes couldn’t qualify for the postseason. McAlester’s district opponents for the next two years will be Coweta, Cascia Hall, Durant, East Central, Shawnee, Tahlequah and Thomas Edison.

Five of McAlester’s district opponents made the 2013 boys’ 5A state soccer tournament. East Central went the farthest, reaching the semifinals before falling to eventual champion Heritage Hall.

Cascia Hall and Thomas Edison both lost in the quarter-finals, and Tahlequah and Coweta both lost in the first round. Durant and Shawnee didn’t qualify.

Four opponents made the girls’ state tournament. Thomas Edison went the farthest, reaching the semifinals before losing to eventual champion Deer Creek.

Cascia Hall reached the quarter-finals, and Coweta and Durant lost in the first round. Shawnee, Tahlequah and East  Central didn’t qualify.

None of McAlester’s district opponents have won state championships in soccer. Heritage Hall and Northwest Classen have won the last two boys’ tournaments, while Deer Creek has won the last two girls’ tournaments.

Heritage Hall will be in District 5A-1 for the next two years, Northwest Classen and Deer Creek in 5A-2.

Bishop Kelley had dominated 5A soccer until it moved to 6A starting with the 2011-12 school year. Bishop Kelley won nine state championships in boys’ and girls’ soccer from 2006-2011.

Though McAlester’s soccer schedule has yet to be released, the Buffs and Lady Buffs will begin the 2014 season with new coach Sara Jones. Jones brings with her five years of experience coaching soccer and volleyball in the Ferris Independent School District in Texas.

The 2013 Buffs went 2-8 in the first season of soccer offered at McAlester High School, the Lady Buffs 4-6.
