Dugout Club still seeking Sunbelt hosts

McALESTER — The 2013 Junior Sunbelt Classic baseball tournament starts its games on June 7. The tournament annually brings 200 of the best high school baseball players in North America to McAlester and Wilburton, and with those players come college scouts, tourism and money for McAlester’s Dugout Club.

The challenge for McAlester High School principal Paula Meadows: finding houses for those 200 players. As of Saturday, Meadows said she's still looking for 15-20 families.

Host families must provide their players with breakfast, transport them to Mike Deak Field every morning and pick them up there every night, and wash their uniforms. In exchange for these services, families will receive free passes to all the games.

“People need to know that if they’re looking for a great week of baseball and just a chance to make some lifelong relationships, this is a great way to do it,” Meadows said Friday.

“When they first get here, they’re usually pretty quiet, because they don’t know what they’re really getting into, coming somewhere to stay with a family for five days or six days. But by the end of the week, they’re like another member of your family.”

Families interested in hosting Sunbelt players can call Meadows at 918-429-2759.
