McALESTER — The McAlester Buffaloes accomplished what they needed to at Monday’s regional tennis tournament in Duncan, qualifying all six varsity players to Friday’s 5A state tournament at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center.
But the Buffs will head to state without the momentum of a regional championship, having lost by two points to Oklahoma Christian. The Buffs lost two of their final matches in three sets, essentially falling two games shy of a team championship.
One-singles player Ngoc Nguyen did his job for the Buffs, beating Durant in the championship, 6-0, 6-2. But Chance Sistrunk fell to Durant in the two-singles championship, 6-4, 0-6, 4-6.
One-doubles pair Taeam Kang and Sam DeNike lost in the semifinals, then fell to Durant in the third-place game, 4-6, 7-5, 5-7. Two-doubles team Zach Dugan and Eric Borengasser lost to Oklahoma Christian in the championship, 6-2, 6-3.
In this past Saturday's girls’ 5A state tournament at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center, yhe Lady Buffs finished tied for 14th, scoring just one team point. One-doubles pair Jennifer Amy and Loretta Medina were the only Lady Buffs to win a first-round match, beating Claremore, 7-5, 6-1.
The team eventually lost to Tahlequah in the seventh-place game, 7-5, 6-2. Medina sprained her ankle during the seventh-place match.
