McALESTER — The McAlester Buffaloes’ streak of appearances in the 5A state golf tournament ended Monday, when the team failed to qualify out of its regional at the Shawnee Country Club. Buffs coach Chris Zike said Josh Byrd had to withdraw right before the tournament with an illness, and with the scores of all four remaining Buffs golfers counting, the team had trouble playing relaxed.

While the team didn’t advance, sophomore Dexter Brown did, finishing fifth among individuals from non-qualifying schools. Brown shot an 87 and then an 85 across 36 holes.

The state tournament starts Monday at the Tulsa Country Club. Brown will be paired with Guthrie’s Wyatt Bartels and Lawton MacArthur’s Trent Meisel, and the trio will start at 8 a.m. at Tee 10.

The tournament will consist of 54 holes — 36 on Monday, 18 on Tuesday.
