HARTSHORNE — Hartshorne junior Brett Akins pitched a complete-game two-hitter, striking out seven and leading Hartshorne to a 5-0 win against McAlester at the Coal Mining Summer Festival at Clark & Wanda Bass Field in Hartshorne.
After a 1-2-3 top of the first from McAlester, Hartshorne jumped all over McAlester starter Brandon Green in the bottom of the first. Akins singled to left with one out, then Tyler Lindley reached on an error by shortstop Taylor Mullins.
Colton Tubbs doubled to left, scoring Akins and putting Hartshorne up 1-0. Blake Tubbs then drove in Lindley with a single to center field, and Ledgen Angeli blooped one just over Mullins’ head to score Tubbs and make it 3-0 Miners.
Green got Chance Parker to ground into a fielder’s choice at second base for the second out of the inning, but the Buffs couldn’t turn the grounder into double play. Eight-hole hitter Braxton Curliss then crushed one to the wall in left-center, scoring two to make it 5-0 Miners.
