KREBS — The Thunder got 22 runners on base Saturday, but only four got on via actual hits. That didn’t stop the Thunder from scoring in all five innings it batted and beating the Timber Rattlers, 12-7, in the second round of the Pittsburg County Little League AAA tournament Saturday at Deerinwater Field in Krebs.
With his team down a run in the top of the third, Timber Rattlers reliever Ethan Gillespie walked five consecutive batters with two outs. The Thunder scored three times during that stretch, all of the runs coming on passed balls, and ended the inning up 8-2.
The Timber Rattlers’ offense finally came to life in the bottom of the fourth, loading the bases and then scoring on a fielder’s choice that Warden dropped at home plate. Back-to-back walks by Ethan Gillespie and Jared McIntosh cut the deficit to 11-5, then the Timber Rattlers scored twice more on passed balls to automatically end the inning.
Given a few more innings, momentum might’ve swung back the Timber Rattlers way. But with the two-hour time limit drawing near, Max DeFrange led off the top of the fifth with a walk, then 11-hole hitter Hunter Brown knocked one down the first base line, giving DeFrange enough time to get all the way home on the walk-off triple.
