Crowder softball run-rules Hartshorne

CROWDER — Great teams like the Crowder Demonettes — ranked third in Class 3A as of Tuesday — rarely allow their opponents more than a couple of real scoring opportunities.

The Hartshorne Lady Miners loaded the bases in back-to-back innings, but they came away with just one run. That wasn’t nearly enough to withstand the Demonettes’ unrelenting offense.

Crowder's offense belted out 12 hits in four innings — including a three-run home run by Sierra Romine in the bottom of the fourth — wrapping up the softball regular season with an 11-1 win at home against Hartshorne on Tuesday.

Already up 2-1 heading into the bottom of the third, Katie Leak got things started for the Demonettes with a single. Kaitlan Cook singled Leak to second, and Crowder loaded the bases when Hartshorne couldn't complete a fielder's choice at second.

Kelsie Roach then drove in two with a double that rolled to the wall in left field, and Sierra Vasquez drove in two more with a single. Rachel Johnson made it 7-1 Crowder with an RBI sacrifice fly two batters later.

“If the top of our lineup does what they’re supposed to, they get on base; the middle of the lineup is supposed to bring them in,” Crowder coach Charles Durrence said. “Down at the bottom, we have speed again, so that’s what we’re going to do — get on base and drive ‘em in.

Crowder added to its lead in the bottom of the fourth. Leak singled with one out, finishing the day 3-for-3 with two runs scored.

“When she was pitching, they were falling a lot more in front of me,” Leak said. “I just took a few steps in and sent it.”

Skylar Wood reached on an error in the fourth, then Cook knocked in Leak with a single.
